When a client contacts me, he or she does not have to be certain about starting psychotherapy sessions. We first schedule an initial assessment appointment, which allows me to gather considerable background information regarding current problems and needs. Also in that appointment, we discuss my impressions, whether treatment might be useful, what treatment might entail, and reasonable expectations for improvement. It is important to provide clients with this information and help them make informed decisions about their treatment needs.
After an initial assessment appointment, it might be appropriate to move on to treatment, which can be short-term or long-term. Alternatively, a client and I might determine that one or more additional assessment appointments, to discuss additional relevant information, are needed before making treatment decisions. Each client has his or her unique needs, and I strive to make the best use of time and help clients determine what is best for them. If we determine that continued treatment with me is not the best course of action, and it appears that treatment of some form is warranted, I strive to make appropriate recommendations for other services or individuals who might best serve your needs.
I believe it is important to provide services that draw on my education and training, my clinical experience, and what the research literature suggests is most effective. I also believe that a collaborative, working alliance with a client is essential to the effectiveness of psychotherapy. Accordingly, I take time to clearly understand clients’ needs and goals and to develop plans for services that are specific to individual needs. I do not adopt a “one size fits all” approach and am flexible in adapting evidence-based approaches to clients’ needs.
